Bob Costas B-Day Meets Van Halen Rocker Abducted by Aliens

The Red Rocker Sammy Hagar writes about his 'travels' and is in town for book-signing.

The Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar, in town promoting his new book, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, has the web all abuzz about his claim to have once been abducted by aliens. He told an MTV website: “It was real. Aliens were plugged into me. It was a download situation.” 

St. Louis has long had a love affair with Hagar starting in the early days of KSHE Radio in Crestwood. “It was KSHE Radio that helped him get on the map,” said Al Hofer, “106.5 The Arch” disc jockey and graduate. Hofer, who started his radio career at KSHE, has met Hagar several times. “My most vivid memory was (Hagar) calling KSHE to break the news that he was joining Van Halen as lead vocalist. He gave KSHE the scoop and it of course made national headlines.”

At one time KSHE Radio was located across from what is now t behind the long-gone Ronnie’s Drive-In. Hagar continues to have ties in St. Louis with his Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill at Harrah's Casino…

It was déjà vu in Gym 3 at Lindbergh High School with former Principal Don Jones at the scorer’s table for the TAF (Tornado Assistance Fund) fundraiser. Jones was very popular among students in the 1970’s, and one of his former students, was on hand as the current LHS Athletic Director.

Daniel Crum, a sophomore at Affton High School is to be recognized April 30 at the National Sportsmanship Awards celebrating all that's right in sports at the Headquarters on Manchester Road near I-270. Crum, who plays on the school's golf team despite being legally blind, was nominated by the St. Louis Sports Commission (http://www.stlsports.org/awards/index.php) after someone saw an article about him on Patch.

The evening honors athletes and personalities from around the nation for their integrity, class, selflessness, perseverance, kindness, community service and overall commitment to sportsmanship. Crum will receive the “Good Sport Award” and is the only person from St. Louis on the honoree list which also includes the Wake Forest Baseball Coach, the Albany N.Y. Basketball Team, and the U.S. U-17 Women’s Soccer Team, to name a few…

NBC sports broadcaster Bob Costas, who still has family in St. Louis, celebrated his birthday this week. Restaurant owner Kevin O’Leary recalled a previous March evening when Costas celebrated at O’Leary’s with who is part owner in the restaurant. When reached by phone, Costas remembered it fondly…

Speaking of fond memories, it was a sad day for Lindbergh High School this week as Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band Director Bob Spiegelman was buried Wednesday. According to those close to the family, a memorial service to celebrate his life is in the works for May or June.
