Crestwood Naval Senior Chief Killed in Helicopter Crash

The Lindbergh High alumnus was conducting a heavy lift operation in Oman when the crash occurred.

Sean "Sully" Patrick Sullivan, 40, of Crestwood, was killed in a naval air heavy-lift operation in Oman July 19.

Sullivan's funeral will be held at Kutis Affton Chapel on Gravois at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Department of Defense reports say Sullivan was a senior chief aviation warfare systems operator. The 1990 Lindbergh High School graduate joined the navy shortly after graduation. He was a fourth-generation sailor, according to a release from the Crestwood Police Department.

Sullivan served in Operation Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to the release. He earned three Strike Flight Air medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and Army Achievement Medal, and numerous campaign and unit awards.

Sullivan is survived by his wife, Amy.

The City of Crestwood Board of Aldermen recognized a moment of silence to honor Sullivan's passing at the July 24 Board meeting, sending condolences to Sullivan's family and friends.

Lindbergh's Facebook page said they are "thankful for Officer Sullivan's service to our country."

Sullivan's name will appear on the City of Crestwood's Veterans Memorial at City Hall.

A memorial service was held in Norfolk last Thursday, according to a report from WVEC 13.

Memorials may be made to the Crestwood Veterans Memorial Committee or the Wounded Warrior Project c/o Connie Melching, Crestwood Police Department, #1 Detjen Dr., Crestwood.

Sean is a hero and one of those rare human beings who could light up a room with his presence alone. A true family man and American. God bless.

Well Kyle your correct in that he was a Chief Petty Officer with Air Crew and Air Warfare specialty rating's. He was also much more than that, he was a dedicated member of the United States Navy who fought and died for our way of life and our freedom to post here or anywhere else. I for one salute him for his dedication and service to America.

My apologies -- other reports referred to him as an officer and I have updated the article to reflect his standing.

Sean was one of those "extraordinary Americans who gave his last full measure of devotion defending the freedoms we cherish. This ultimate sacrifice is one we can never fully repay, and the enormity of the grief the families carry we can never fully know." I honor his service, and my heart breaks for his loss.

Sean was a loyal, dedicated friend. He always greeted me with a smile and a hug. We dated off and on throughout highnschool but always remained friends. He was a big teddy bear and he always had my back. For as long as I can remember Sean talked about serving our country. He was as dedicated to his friends and family as he was defending our freedoms. I will never forget taking drivers ed with him in high school. We would have so much fun in Mr. Norton's class. I am forever grateful for his service and for the opportunity to have called him my friend. Love you always....~T
