Former LHS student wins Sports Commission Scholarship, Debra Peppers is on a television show, and various charity and networking events highlight this week's column.

Crestwood’s Katie Kennedy, a 2011 graduate of Lindbergh High School and incoming student at Maryville University, is one of three to win the Outstanding Sportsmanship in Athletic Competition Scholarship from the St. Louis Sports Commission Associates. She will receive a $2,500 award to apply to higher education expenses.

Kennedy was a member of the LHS track and field team and captain of the varsity cheerleading squad.  During her senior year, she broke the school’s pole vault record. It is her kindness and integrity that has made her one of the most popular pole vaulters in the area.

According to one of her coaches, Kennedy was always one of the first to congratulate anyone who beat her and was the first to console anyone who finished behind her.

Eighty five year old Jerry Lewis has been replaced as host of the MDA Telethon, which is broadcast locally in St. Louis on KSDK Channel Five. Crestwood has played a big role in the local televising of the fundraiser as it was held for many years at Crestwood Plaza before being moved to Grant's Farm. KSDK will once again be broadcasting from Grant’s Farm and the general public is encouraged to stop by for some fun and games and to donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Last week students got to ring the much talked-about bell, dated 1886, that was restored courtesy of the Sappington-Concord Historical Society  to celebrate the grand re-opening of Concord School, which officially welcomes students Tuesday. The bell was discovered in the renovation of the school and according to Lindbergh’s Communications Director Beth Cross that was not the only interesting discovery—the building had unique insulation.

“A long time ago, builders used horsehair for insulation,” she said. “We unloaded a truckful in the process of gutting this historic building.”
