Karl Rove's 'Murder' Joke About Todd Akin - Out of Line?

Rep. Todd Akin's office said Karl Rove must have "misspoke" when he reportedly made a "murder" joke about the U.S. Senate candidate. What do you think, a joke or out of line?

According to Politico, in a closed-door fundraiser at the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove reportedly joked about the murder of Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin.

“We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!” joked Rove, according to a Businessweek report of the fundraiser included in the Politico article.

The alleged comment comes after, as previously reported by Patch, Akin, his family and his staff reportedly began receiving threats of death and violence following his comments on "legitimate rape" during a St. Louis area television interview.

Friday, in response to the alleged statements by Rove, Akin's office issued the following statement saying Rove must have "misspoke."

“Given the current FBI investigation of threats against Congressman Akin and call for acts of violence and rape against his family and staff joking as to the potential murder of congressman Akin is deeply disturbing.  I am certain he misspoke,”  Steve Taylor District Director of Congressman Akin.

Unfortunate off the cuff remark.

Rove is unfit for office, but obviously he isn't running for office ...he only helps others that are unfit for office, run for office. As he expressed in that remark, it is a tall task with Akin.

Rove is simply the master puppeteer behind the scenes. He's quite skilled but all too often uses his skills...less than honorably. It was an awful thing to say and too typical of his hatchet job thinking.

I dont believe in abortion, but I believe a woman has the right to choose. It goes back to original sin. Right?

I wish that abortion was retroactive. This would solve many of the problems we're facing today as a barely civilized society.

St Louis has a Holocaust Museum - I encourage you to go visit, then say to me "I don't believe in murder, but people have the right to choose" - unfortunately, you are correct that humans have been given free will by God, but the consequences can be terrible...when we choose not to deal with our "original sin", but hide behind it as excuse.

Todd Akin is one of the few honest, professional, educated and knowledgeable Republicans in the USA. He is not swayed by any of his fellow Republicans when it comes to his beliefs and his leadership. I was once asked by a friend to explain why I had so much respect for Congressman Akin and immediately I thought about his leadership and what distinguished him from other politicians - it is that his politics are as "white as the driven snow". He is not a follower, nor influenced by money and he certainly has never been afraid to keep his constituents informed. His private and public life is as white as the driven snow - I challenge any politican - Republican or Democrat - to come anywhere close to his unswerving leadership, infinite wisdom, knowledge, honesty and patriotism. I may not agree with all his comments or political views, but he has what it takes to lead this country. Shame on Mitt Romney if, indeed, he asked one of the most respected Congressmen to "step down". How unfortunate that Romney and his cohorts chose one issue to discredit Congressman Akin. And they call themselves "leaders"?

You are right. Our politicians get all caught up in the emotion and opinions which are thrown around. Then they talk too much instead of quietly thinking and implementing of solutions.

"Todd Akin is one of the few honest, professional, educated and knowledgeable Republicans in the USA".

If this is true.. The Republicans are a very sad lot. If he is the pinnacle of knowledge and education of the loyal opposition...all I can say is WOW.

Like Congressman Akin, my comments were from the heart and appear to have hit a nerve to those of different persuasions. That was not my intent. My comments were based on his proven leadership and not intended to expose generic negative or political rhetoric.

Hitler was one of the greatest leaders ever in history, but I am pretty sure I wouldn't want him as my leader.

It all came down to the word "legitimate". If you care to break it down, thete are women, who when caught pregnant from promiscuous play, decide to cry rape. So is that legitimate or illegitimate rape? Poor choice of words, yes; but who among us is perfect? I was raised to remember when I point s finger, three point back at me. So often the media give us a quote and not the whole story. But we do lovd drama, don't we?

"the heart of liberalism really is a hatred for God"
-Todd Akin

Are you comfortable with that comment too?

Westboro Church, Bin Laden, Hussein - all claimed God on their side, because the opposing side hates God. etc

Those who immediately called for TA to withdraw really blew it. They should have said, "That was a really stupid comment- worse than some of Joe Biden's. He should talk to a real doctor and get his facts straight." Then TA should have gone right back on the Jaco show (He should never have gone on it in the first place.) and correct his remark. Those who acted as judge and jury and pronounced the death penalty were neither fair nor politically smart.

Nothing Vice President Joe Biden has said comes close to the sexist, misogynistic, uncaring comments of Todd Akin, whose hatred of women reeks from his comments like rotten flesh. As horrendous, uncaring and anti-women a person as his comments show him to be, Karl Rove is worse. Joking about killing someone should be taken seriously, but then Rove, one of the architects of the illegal war in Iraq that should never have been launched, should have been behind bars years ago for war crimes.

Since some are ready to put Mr. Rove in jail for war crimes on top of his bad joke about murder, I wonder if they support the use of homicide drone missles against all "enemies", even American citizens, without a trial.

Akin was exactly right! Fertility doctors will tell you that high stress levels do indeed lessen the chances of pregnancy. Such is true in all species, just a fact of nature. The amount of course is different in any given case.

And the word legitimate has many more meanings than just "lawful"! In this case, it was used to denote a "real" or forced, violent rape. Ask the Duke Lacrosse players of a few years back, about "illegitimate" rape!

Karl Rove is the guy "who must go"! He DIDN'T missspeak! He attempted to joke about murder, in a highly volatile situation! Akin, his family and cohorts had already had threats made against them.
