Updated: New Owner Takes Over O'Leary's

The Sunset Hills pub, co-owned by actor John Goodman, is switching owners after 16 years in business. Don't worry, the fried pickles are staying.

Updated: Nov. 20, 9 p.m.

After just a few months on the market, O'Leary's has a new owner.

The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen approved business and liquor licenses Nov. 30 for Phillip Greene.

The Sunset Hills pub, best known for its fried pickles and connection to co-owner John Goodman, was in business under its original owners for 16 years. A representative for Kaplan Real Estate told Patch in July health issues played a factor in the family's decision to retire from the restaurant business.

Greene assured the board that fried pickles will stay, though he's open to other menu suggestions.

Greene will be taking over the space sometime after the first of the year.

The restaurant was one of several structures damaged on New Year's Eve 2010, and the restaurant hosted a fundraiser to benefit the storm's victims, according to KSDK.

O'Leary's was also voted favorite place to celebrate St. Patrick's Day by Patch Readers.

This was a restaurant I was told to check out as a newbie to the community! Would you like to see the restaurant's identity retained? What other cuisine would be good along Lindbergh?

The new owners should add craft beers and use the old menu from Growler's pub.

When you see the words.. 'Health Issues' and 'fried pickles' in the same paragraph..''you have to wonder if it's a coincidence.....

I'm thinking the place has had a string of bad luck—it had to pay in a lawsuit over a SH cop who left there after 5 drinks, and killed 4-5 people in a drunken car crash. Then, the New Year's Eve tornado blasted it when Goodman was there visiting. He walked outside after the doors and windows had been blown out, asked a woman if she was okay, and drove away.

Well if the woman said she was OK I don't see the point of Mr. Goodman sticking around. He probably had other people and property to check on after the tornado came through.

Jean... You about 90% wrong. THe Sunset HIlls cop did not leave O'Learys after 5 drinks. She DID leave before 11:00p. She had her accident at 1:45am after leaving Fandango's at Doughtery Ferry and Big Bend, but Goodman's name isn't on Fandango's note. And as for your assessment of John's character on New Year's Eve Tornado. John was not O'Leary's when the tornado hit. He was on his way on there. He arrived well after the tornado hit. After he checked on his friends and others and the police ASKED to him to leave the area... he went to one of his oldest friend's FUNERAL. IS that okay with you Jean? Does John or Kevin, whomever need to make an announcement to you as to why they are leaving? Oh by they way none this is really your F-ing business to begin with but if you are going to inject your opinion; back it up with FACTS.

Actually Jimmy, the new owner hasn't taken over yet. That will occur after the first of the year.

The new owner is "Jason" Green. He has been the general manager of McGurk's for more than 10 years. I am really excited to see him take over this restaurant. He has done an astounding job with McGurk's over the past decade. I can only see great promise as he becomes the owner and manager here at O'Leary's. I can't wait to see my new friend and his wife, who is an amazing chef, put their great spin on this establishment!
