On the Road: What's Next for Crestwood Roadways

Pavement sealing and restoration may be on the horizon for Crestwood's Public Works Board.

Contrasting the use of different overlaying techniques, the Crestwood Public Works Board sought a different approach to preserving current roadways, old and new.

At the Public Works Board meeting June 20, Corrective Asphalt Materials (CAM) presented road restoration and preservation procedures for asphalt old and new.

Reclamite, according to Jack Witte, civil engineer and CAM president, is a method of rejuvenating newer asphalt overlays. A maltene-based petroleum product, it coats, penetrates and seals current overlays on roads coated within 0-6 years.

Witte said the idea behind the substance is to prevent hard wear on the pavement, not add an additional layer. Roads are coated with reclamite and then sprayed with sand to regain surface traction, all within about half an hour, Witte said. After 24 hours, the sand would be swept away. The treatment would cost 70-80 cents per square yard, according to Witte.

A CRF restorative seal would be used on older pavement, aiming to make the roadway last 4-7 years longer than without. The seal is made of reclamite and 11 percent asphalt and also takes longer to coat streets. Witte said traffic could flow on top of the coat within 30 minutes, the coat costing $1.05-$1.15 per square yard.

Overall, the Board suggested recommending selecting a test street to the Board of Aldermen to observe product treatment. Witte said the city could save $2 per square yard on roadway repairs and new asphalt overlays by extending the life of the pavement, "spending a little money now to save more later."
