Sunset Hills Can Go Green, Save Money on Sales Tax Holiday
Sales tax will be exempt on Energy Star certified appliances April 19-25. The Green Objectives (GO) for Sunset Hills Committee will be hosting free Earth Day activities and a yard waste clean-up day.
The month of April is packed with opportunities for Sunset Hills residents to make their lives 'greener'--including a sales tax break for those who purchase environmentally-conscious appliances.
The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen approved the city's participation in the Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday during their Feb. 26 meeting. Similar to the back to school sales tax holiday, purchases of specific green items will be exempt from sales tax. In this case, rsidents who purchase Energy Star-certified new appliances can save up to $1,500 per appliance from April 19-25.
Qualifying items include: washers, water heaters, dishwashers, air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators, freezers and heat pumps.
The Green Objectives (GO) for Sunset Hills Committee is also hosting two free green efforts in April. They'll be continuing their Earth Day event on April 14 with several local green vendors, children’s activities, plant exchange, and recycling opportunities. Resident can also participate in Missouri’s first Global Run 4 Water, Crestwood-Sunset Hills Rotary Club's 5k sponsor run to bring clean water to all parts of the world.

The GO Committee also recently announced they were teaming up with city's Parks and Recreation Department to organize a Spring Clean Up Day on April 20. The city's Community Center will provide trash bags to help residents clean up yard waste, flower beds and debris. American Eagle will pick up bags from designated drop points for free.
"Depending upon the response and needs of our community, we have volunteers, students and scouts in need of service hours and willing to participate," added GO Committee founder Alderman Dee Baebler in a news release.
"This day may also be used as a day to get out and help neighbors who are sick, elderly or otherwise in need of our help. Sunset Hills is a great community because we are good neighbors!"
The effort requires residents to appoint a captain for their neighborhood. Contact Baebler at 314-800-3613 or dbaebler@sunset-hills.com to get more information and instruction.

I'm all for real improvements in appliances and other technology. But let's not fool ourselves so we can "feel better" that we aren't wrecking the planet. The low-flush toilet, for example, has to be flushed multiple-times if you know what I mean. That obviates any water savings for "feel good". As for the low-water washing machines, they are awful. Clothes simply aren't as clean. Some tech works, some doesn't. That's to say nothing about the mercury in these so-called "energy saver" light bulbs the Democrats are forcing us to use.

As a long time resident of Crestwood, I have a question regarding recycling. I have had a large saltwater tank for years and I have accumulated quite a few used T-5 (compact florescent type light bulbs) I do not want to throw them in the regular trash which I was told to do. Is there a recycling center around Crestwood/Sunset Hills that will take these bulbs. When I call a center I am told they do not take in T-5's. Maybe during the "Earth Day" celebration, there will be a drop off drive that includes florescent type bulbs. JAH
