Panera Bread Co. Headquarters Expansion Means New Jobs in St. Louis

Panera will add 85 jobs to their Sunset Hills offices, according to St. Louis Business-Journal.

St. Louis Bread Company recently added 31,000 square feet to their headquarters in Sunset Hills--and the expansion will come with a boost for the local job market. The expansion is "to accommodate growth of the company," St. Louis Business-Journal reports, which includes plans to hire 85 employees. Bread Co. is known as Panera Bread nationally. Panera isn't the only company with new space in the Laumeier Office Park--athletic shoe company New Balance has also leased space to bring a call center to the office park.

Sunset Hills Couple Opens Fizzy's in Webster Groves

The soda fountain and restaurant opened Monday in the former home of Dr. Jazz on Gore Avenue.

A Sunset Hills couple is helping the soda fountain make a comeback in Webster Groves. After Dr. Jazz closed on Gore Avenue earlier this year, Fizzy's began to move in a few months after the space was up for lease.  Owner Michelle Bray and her husband, Tom, said they've made a point to hit soda fountains on their travels across the country, and wanted to keep the idea behind Dr. Jazz. Fizzy's opened Saturday, just in time for business from Webster Grooves music festival attendees, which took place along Gore Avenue. "We're hoping to be a place where kids can come after school, or people can visit from down the street on their lunch break," Michelle told Patch. "We love the soda fountain and Webster's a great place." Join Sunset Hills-…

Army of Neighbors Turned Back Walmart, Organizer Says

Maryann Gregory says she'll be keeping an eye on a tract of land near her South County neighborhood to make sure a disrupting business doesn't try to build there.

When Maryann Gregory told her son she was starting a petition drive to stop Walmart from building a grocery store in her neighborhood, she said his response was: "You can't beat 'em Mom." To which she replied, "Watch me. I've got me an army of neighbors." "Walmart has a bigger army," he reportedly replied. "But we have God on our side," Gregory said. In the end, Gregory and her small cadre of signature gatherers were able to convince the St. Louis County Planning Commission to reject a rezoning request from Walmart that would have paved the way for a Walmart Neighborhood Market near the intersection of Tesson Ferry and Butler Hill roads. Dick's Sporting Goods Coming to South County

The South County Center store will be the company's fourth to open in the St. Louis area, and the closest for South County residents.

Dick's Sporting Goods is coming to South County Center. There have been weeks of speculation that mega-sporting goods store was going to set up shop at the mall. However, Patch had been unable to verify the information with Dick's or South County Center. Patch reader Justin Stafford contacted us on Wednesday saying the spot that the yearly carnival normally occupies had been fenced off and ground has been moved. He was wondering what was going on. Thursday night, Stafford submitted the attached photo. Representatives from Dick's and South County Center on Friday were unable to discuss the specifics of the new store, but say more information will be available soon. This will be Dick's fourth location in St. Louis. The company's other stores…

Crestwood Court: New Aldermen, Same Vote

Mayor Jeff Schlink was once again asked to break a tie regarding the planning consultant for mall redevelopment. Find out what choice he made on Tuesday.

Crestwood's four new aldermen were asked to take a new look at a previously defeated Crestwood Court measure Tuesday night--though the vote ended up in a familiar place. Aldermen reviewed a contract with PGAV Planners to perform consulting services related to the mall's entertainment-focused redevelopment plan. PGAV's anaysis is a preliminary step on the road to determining whether to grant the mall's developer, Centrum Partners, around $34 million in tax assistance to fund the project.  Join Sunset Hills-Crestwood Patch for more community news or join us on Facebook and Twitter. City attorney Rob Goltermann said the new agreement was "modified slightly to reflect a reduced scope of work," and thereby a reduced contract amount. PGAV has …

41,000 is a lot less than a Crestwood dogcatcher and considerable less than replacing a City Administrator Grant. I vote he Aldermanic board initiate the consultation.. then the can all nod sagely as the report is read. Crestwood Court Conversation Reignites With New Aldermen

See what the Crestwood and Sunset Hills boards will be discussing at their May 14 meetings.

Tuesday night the Crestwood Board of Aldermen will have their first discussion on mall redevelopment with its four newly elected members. Board members will review an agreement with PGAV Planners for planning services. The previous board appointed Centrum Partners as the site's developer last year, but declined to move forward with PGAV for planning services. If the agreement is approved, the city will be able to move forward in deciding whether to grant Centrum Partners tax assistance to fund the project. The total redevelopment cost is estimated at $121 million, with a proposed $34 million tax increment financing (TIF), a transportation development district (TDD), and community improvement district (CID) Browse Patch's coverage of the …

Do You Support a Sales Tax for Online Purchases?

The Marketplace Fairness Act was approved in the U.S. Senate, and is headed for the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives. The bill would require merchants to collect sales taxes on online purchases.

It's called the "Marketplace Fairness Act" and supporters say it levels the playing field between online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores by requiring online merchants to pay sales taxes to the states, counties and localities where they have done business. Opponents include anti-tax activists and retailers who say it will be overly burdensome—in fact, nearly impossible, they say, to keep track of the tax rates and tax requirements for the myriad of taxing agencies where they may be doing business. The Marketplace Fairness Act passed the U.S. Senate 69-27 on Monday. Next up, the legislation goes to the GOP-led House. President Barack Obama has previously said he supports the bill. Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, voted for …

Let me commend you on your typing abilities. In 1986 the US congress passed "new laws" for immigration. Even though we had hundreds of laws stating exactly how to deport those breaking the laws. None were followed. The Govt just did not follow the laws. Amnesty took place with maybe under 6mill illegals kept in this country. So now we have over 14mill new illegals. So now in 2013 congress wants …   more ›
