Updated: April 11, 4 p.m. A candidate in this year's Crestwood Board of Aldermen election was found to have a felony conviction--a violation of the city's terms for serving office. His candidacy has raised questions among current aldermen who don't want to see the situation repeated. Mary Stadter will serve as Ward 2's newest aldermanic representative. South County Times first reported last month that her opponent, Bill Schelinski, filed for candidacy despite being convicted of aggravated assault several years ago. The conviction made him ineligible for a board seat, according to the city. Schelinski said the documents he received from the city when filing did not mention felony convictions. It had to pass in both St. Louis City and St. Louis County in order to impose the sales tax increase to fund improvements around the Gateway Arch, local parks and regional trails.
Voters in St. Louis County and St. Louis City said yes to a 3/16ths of one-cent sales tax increase designed to fund about $31 million a year in improvements to the Gateway Arch grounds, the regional Great Rivers Greenway trails and greenways, and for city and county parks. The measure had to pass in both the county and the city in order to be implemented. In the city, with 100 percent of the vote counted, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the proposition won with 67 percent of the vote. With 100 percent of the votes counted in the county, the proposition passed easily with a 53 percent to 47 percent margin. He'll serve on the board overseeing fire protection efforts in Mehlville, Oakville, Sunset Hills, Green Park, Lakeshire, Concord Village, Sappington and Lemay.
With more than 60 percent of the vote, Ed Ryan won a spot on the Mehlville Fire Protection District board Tuesday night over challenger Mike Klund. Ryan earned more than 8,000 votes, or 63.1 percent of the vote. The Mehlville Fire Protection District provides fire, rescue, emergency medical, fire prevention and inspection services for the cities of Sunset Hills, Green Park, Lakeshire, the townships of Oakville, Mattese, Concord Village, Sappington and portions of Lemay and unincorporated St. Louis County. Bill Schelinski's name will appear on the April 2 ballot against Mary Stadter in Ward II. The city has not yet made a determination whether he will be able to serve in office.
A candidate for Crestwood's Ward II aldermanic seat may have violated city charter by running for office despite a previous felony conviction, South County Times reported last week. However, Bill Schelinski's name will appear on the April 2 ballot. What happens next is still up in the air. Schelinski was convicted of aggravated assault in Illinois in 1996, South County Times reported. Schelinski told South County Times the copy of the city charter he received had no mention of felony convictions prohibiting residents from running for office. Patch sent all candidates running for seats on the Mehlville Fire Protection District's Board of Directors identical questionnaires in order to compile candidate profiles prior to the April 2 election. The Mehlville Fire Protection District provides fire, rescue, emergency medical, fire prevention and inspection services for the cities of Sunset Hills, Green Park, Lakeshire, the townships of Oakville, Mattese, Concord Village, Sappington and portions of Lemay and unincorporated St. Louis County, according to the district's web site.
