About the House

Scott Haggerty shares real estate expertise with local residents.

With Groundhog Day past we are now enamored with trying to decide if the prediction is really going to be accurate this year for an early Spring. I am not certain, but the Farmer’s Almanac usually seems to be more accurate than any meteorologist--or groundhog for that matter!

So now is the time of year, looking toward Spring, that many homeowners ask the question: “Is now a good time to buy a home or sell my current home?”

I usually answer: “Yes.” Then I ask a plethora of questions to see exactly what the buyer or seller wants to accomplish.

There is so much information available at our fingertips but we still need to ask for a professional opinion--and that’s exactly what it boils down to--an opinion.

While most realtors® are well-versed in a particular area or dealing with a certain segment of buyers or sellers, we too must analyze the changing housing market and all the factors that influence prices, marketing time, interest rates, availability and inventory of homes.

The best thing to do is ask as many questions as possible and ask your friends or family for a referral to someone they have happily worked with. Then ask that realtor® as many questions as you can.

Like most professions, there are very successful agents, very good agents and then there are agents you would love to introduce to your enemies.

A successful, good and qualified realtor® is a member in good standing and will do what is best for you and your situation. That realtor® will ask you questions in order to thoroughly understand how to optimize your time and accomplish your goals.

As with many of my decisions, after analyzing the facts I usually do a “gut check.” If I am comfortable with the person and feel I understand the facts that influence a particular issue, my decision becomes much easier.

Kind of like the Groundhog looking for its shadow and hoping there won't be six more weeks of bad weather. Then again, if you found the right realtor® to help youu find the perfect home, who cares if you have six more weeks of winter--you're at home!

Check every Thursday for lists of open houses on Sunday.
