Dog Day Care Coming to Watson Road

A doggie day care will be coming to Watson Road.

Tuesday night the Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen approved a request from Patches Ellis to operate a dog day camp at 10390 Watson Rd., between the former ColorArt building and Family Pet Hospital.

This was not Ellis’s first go-around with the board.  When she first presented the business plan in November Ellis did not receive majority approval from the board--but had earned the attention of neighbors to the south of the property who were concerned about potential noise and smell issues.

The city’s planning and zoning commission gave Ellis their recommendation at their Feb. 6 meeting. Since she was in front of the board in November, Ellis has agreed to install additional fencing, and secured permission from the vet’s office for parking accommodations. Rubber flooring will also be installed to contain noise, Ellis said Tuesday. 

A couple whose home backs up to the business said they'd gathered signatures from 27 homes opposing the dog day care. Deborah Carney said her biggest concern was the noise potential of up to 50 barking dogs within a few hundred feet of her property. 

The day care would be subject to the same disciplinary measures as a resident if barking becomes a nuisance, city attorney Robert Jones said, with a 10-day notice to remedy complaints.
