Earth Day is actually designated Friday, April 22. The celebration was started in 1970 by a Wisconsin senator, and caught on from there. Wikipedia credits the Earth Day movement with the subsequent creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Other efforts aimed at conserving natural resources developed over time, and has grown into "green" awareness in construction, recycling, clothing, manufacturing, cleaning products, and practically every aspect of life—for example assessing one's own "carbon footprint" with fewer short car trips between home and errands, by planning more, walking, riding bikes and using mass transit.
