New Motorcycle Driving Test Implemented

Changes in the motorcycle driver testing program will affect motorcycle drivers.

Effective earlier this month, the Missouri State Highway Patrol implemented statewide changes to both the written and skills tests for motorcycle drivers.

Motorcycle drivers are now being tested according to the latest version of the motorcycle skills testing developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. The updated testing includes a new obstacle swerve test, which measures a driver's ability to use proper avoidance maneuvers. Other test exercises measure skill level.

Since motorcycle styles have changed over the years, the MSHP says that the new testing standards better accommodate those changes.

"Our mission of traffic safety includes all vehicles," said Colonel Ron Replogle in a statement. "It is our goal to reduce motorcycle crashes and fatalities through an updated, more comprehensive testing standard. I am sure the motoring public will benefit from this new testing program."

Both two- and three-wheel motorcycles are included in the new testing.
