Patch Picks: Nonprofits Making a Difference

This week, we single out five local nonprofit organizations that are doing a great job of serving our community.

Patch Picks five local nonprofit organizations that we think are doing a great job of serving our community. Visit or support them however you can, so they can continue helping others. Let us know in the comments who your own picks are.

  • PYC is devoted to building strong communities by providing violence prevention programs for kids from age five to 18. The organization works with parents and schools to teach kids life skills like peaceful conflict resolution, anger management, effective communication and appreciation for diversity.

  • This organization collects reusable materials like paper towel rolls, buttons, glass jars and telephone wires and makes them available for teachers to use in the classroom for art projects and science experiments.

  • Alternative Opportunities helps people with disabilities acquire the skills and opportunities they need to live and work independently and be active members of the community. The organization also provides counseling and rehabilitation for families in crisis, whether it be a result of drugs, abuse or something else.
  • Masterpeace Studios
Masterpeace Studios is dedicated to promoting a healthy, peaceful lifestyle through yoga and meditation, proper nutrition and artistic expression. It offers low-cost programs and workshops in each of these areas, and works with other area organizations like schools, hospice and bereavement centers, and youth programs.

  • Our very own community theatre, Marble Stage is located in Art Space at Crestwood Court. The theatre holds several productions a year, giving community members the chance to experience the joys of theatre—all of them, from constructing the sets to taking the final bow.
