It's almost time for the weekend! Here is your daily fix of happenings for Friday, Aug. 5 (and beyond).

1. Today marks the beginning of the weekend . Take advantage of back-to-school tax benefits while you can! The tax-free weekend officially begins at midnight and ends Sunday at midnight.

2. The KidSmart operation is under way through August. The Bridgeton nonprofit wants to ensure that children and their classrooms in metro St. Louis have the basic tools for learning by transferring, at no cost, the community's surplus supplies and merchandise into the hands of teachers for school children in need.

3. Looking for a new home in the Lindbergh School District? pen houses include Sunset Hills, Crestwood, parts of Concord and a bit of Affton.

4. The Sunset Hills Residential Recovery Task Force met earlier this week to continue discussions regarding the residential redevelopment of Court Drive and West Watson Road west of South Lindbergh Boulevard affected by the New Year's Eve . They will present their recommendation to developers next month.

5. The Missouri State Highway Patrol announces a sobriety checkpoint to be held somewhere in St. Louis County this month. Be safe out there!
