4. On this day in 1988, the lights were turned on at Wrigley Field for the first time, making it the last major league stadium to host night games. In perhaps an homage to the curse, the game, which as against the Philadelphia Phillies, was rained out after 3 1/2 innings.

5. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has established a support fun for the family of Trooper Frederick F. Guthrie Jr, who is a 17-year veteran trooper. He went missing at approximately 3 p.m. Aug. 1 while working Missouri River flood duty. He leaves a wife and three children. Funds can be sent to the Bank of Weston in care of the Guthrie Family fund, P.O. Box 8, Weston, Mo. 64098.
