The goal is to ensure that our entire community is united in supporting these traits. In this month’s Lindbergh Character Education blog, students share examples of Service, Self-Control and Goal Setting. Please share your examples of these traits with us as well in the comments section!

Service

Service is so important for all to do to make our communities better. My friend, Maddie, shows service because she always cares about others and spends much of her free time doing a lot of community service.  She participates in service projects with her church, her soccer teams, in the community and even on her own. She started a cancer service project all by herself and made a major impact on the life of family members and many others in the community also suffering with cancer. This is why I think Maddie is a great example of someone who leads in service. – Emily, Truman Middle School

Service is very important because it is not just a character trait, it is an action that some people display every day. Service can be as easy as picking up trash in a field or as challenging as building homes for people who need them.  Without citizens who show service to others there would be no one to help the less fortunate in order to make our community better and to bring smiles to everyone's faces.  My mom demonstrates service a lot at my school.  She volunteers to work the Sperreng Middle School bookstore several times each month.  My mom also volunteered to be the bookstore chair.  That means that she orders all the supplies for the bookstore and gets volunteers to work in the store during lunch.  My mom also shows service to Sperreng by being the vice president of the PTO and helping parents get involved in the school.  Every day people show service without ever knowing it, like when they help a teacher or do a favor for a neighbor.  Showing service or volunteering may not always be easy, but without citizens serving, our community would not be the same. – Katie, Sperreng Middle School

Service is an important character trait that helps you and many people in need.  My brother Logan shows service to others by joining the Navy.  He will join the service in the summer. He will serve others by serving and protecting our country. – Drew, Truman Middle School

Service is a trait that makes the world better if more people share this trait. My dad shows service because he had to go to Iraq.  While he was out there, he had to come home to his family. So he tried so hard and did a good job guarding trucks and staying safe in the dessert.  He always checked for scorpions and snakes in his boots.  He also got to ride in the tanks.  At one point they said he was going home, but he didn't show up.  We found out he had to stay even longer.  Eventually he came home and it was awesome to our whole family. My dad shows service for family and country. – Kienan, Truman Middle School

Self-Control

I would have to say that self-control is a very important trait to have. Teachers have a lot of it to do their job each day.  Everyone has some self-control, but cannot always show it.  One person to me that shows a lot of self-control is one of my teachers, Mrs. Schneider.  She has to show it every day especially in my seventh period class, which is really noisy.  Mrs. Schneider gives us all a warning and then she calmly says "you guys need to be quiet."  She comes back to school each day with a positive attitude even if her seventh hour class made things tough the day before.  Mrs. Schneider does not give up and she keeps trying to get those kids without self-control to settle down and develop some self-control. – Sarah, Sperreng Middle School

Self-control is very important because without it life would be full of chaos.   Someone with great self-control is Mrs. Jackson because she never gets mad and if she does get a little frustrated she never yells. She is always polite to us and a really fun teacher. She is a good teacher because she has self-control toward other students and teachers. She lets us have fun as long as we keep our own self-control. Mrs. Jackson is the best at showing students real self-control. – Courtney, Sperreng Middle School

Self-control is a very important character trait to have.   Many people have it, but there are also many people around who don't have it. Mrs. Kuehn, a teacher at Truman, shows a huge amount of self-control.  She shows it by not yelling and telling us to calm down.  She never raises her voice at us and gives everyone second chances.  She also lets us get off of the topic from time to time but is really good at getting us back to discussing stoical studies eventually. She is a very good example of someone who shows self-control. – Colleen, Truman Middle School

I think that the most important trait is self-control. This is because you have to have it to succeed in anything you do in life.  My dad shows self-control because he doesn't usually yell. I show self-control because I also have learned not to yell. My friend Brock is also a good example since he doesn't yell either. – Alex, Sperreng Middle School

Self-control is most important to me because it helps me keep an emotional balance within my body. If you're mad at someone and you demonstrate good self-control, you are able to hold that angry emotion in and stay out of trouble.  But when you lack self-control, you'll show your anger in a violent way.  If you lack self-control, you could react by punching, hitting, kicking or other types of violence.  This can be dangerous for the person who lacks it and to the person who angered the other.  Someone who demonstrates a good amount of self-control is my mother.   She often gets angered by my father, brother, and me, but she acts normal.  She doesn't scream but firmly tells us to stop or be quiet. My mother doesn't snap at us when we anger her. Self-control restrains impulses and helps you in all situations. – Hailey, Truman Middle School

Goal-Setting

Goal-setting is a very important character trait.  One person that really exemplifies goal-setting is Michael Phelps.  He went to the Olympics to swim and won all gold medals. This was his goal he had hoped to accomplish.  He would never be where he is today without goal-setting and making goals like becoming a pro and winning gold medals. – Kieran, Truman Middle School

Goal-setting is important because it helps people succeed in life. My friend Aly is a good example of goal-setting.  She is a great athlete and student.  Every day she sets goals like getting A's or a good score on a fitness test.  One day in gym she said she was going to run a mile and she did just that to accomplish something.  Aly gets straight A's and excels on all her work.  Aly is a great example of goal-setting and is also a hard worker.  – Carson, Truman Middle School

I think goal-setting is the most important trait. You always need to be thinking of your future.  If you don't think of what is going to happen next, you won't know what to do. A man that shows goal-setting is Jeff Hardy, since he knew what he had to do to win a shot at the WWF title.  He ended up facing the Undertaker, who he almost beat.  He is a perfect example of success from goal-setting. – Brock, Sperreng Middle School

Goal-setting is a very important trait to have. I believe this because without goals you wouldn't accomplish anything.  For example, I set a goal to be a finalist in a writing contest recently. I had to write multiple drafts until I got it right. But it was worth the hard work since now I am a finalist! – Selma, Sperreng Middle School
