New Crestwood Restaurant Opens for Business

A barn-raising of sorts occurred Thursday in Crestwood as the The Barn Restaurant opened its doors for business.

Karen and Carolyn Mott were busy serving their first customers Thursday at the restaurant they opened at the Old Sappington House property at 1015 S. Sappington Rd., Crestwood.

The mother-daughter team were tending to steady flow of customers late into the afternoon on the first day of business for The Barn Restaurant.

When Patch last visited Mott, she was preparing to take delivery of the restaurant's tableware: bowls, dinner plates, bread plates, soup bowls and other items—150 of each for what she hopes will be 100 customers a day at the new venture.

Many customers stopped by after eating to visit with Karen Mott, who also talked with several members of the media and some old friends. One of those was Robert Austin, an acquaintance from Hilton Head, SC who dropped in to wish her well as the restaurant opened its doors for business. It was in Hilton Head that Karen Mott learned the restaurant business, having worked in an eatery there for many years.

The hot items on opening day were the egg salad and chicken salad sandwiches, Carolyn Mott said. Fewer restaurant-goers ventured as often to a lower portion of the Barn's Menu to sample one the restaurant's signature items - called the Broad Side of the Barn, which consists of hash browns, or Barn Browns as they call them, made on a waffle iron and topped with cheese, bacon, ham, scallions and sour cream.

"It's sort of our version of the slinger, without the chili," Carolyn Mott said.

Karen Mott jokingly said the first-day crowd would enable her to open again for Day 2. She and Carolyn were to assess the inaugural day of business at closing time Thursday to compare notes and make any adjustments to the operation if needed. One item that needed attention was a malfunctioning waffle iron that was a casualty of the first day.
