Sappington Farmers' Market Closing

The Watson Road farmers market, which has focused on offering sustainable food from Illinois and Missouri farmers, closes to St. Louis customers on Aug. 24.

The owners of , 8400 Watson Rd., have decided to close shop after nearly 20 years in business.

The store, which focused on locally produced, sustainable foods, will close Aug. 24, according to a statement from management. Customers first caught wind of the announcement this weekend.

A general manager with the market told Patch they’ll be keeping regular hours until they close. Goods are currently 20 percent off regular prices, and will likely be discounted in further increments throughout the next two weeks until inventory is gone, the manager said.

“We have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making this market a success since purchasing its assets out of bankruptcy earlier this year,” management said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, declining sales, outdated equipment and competition from larger markets in the neighborhood have made continuing operation impossible. We gave it our best shot and thank our employees and customers who have been loyal until the end.”

The 22,000 square feet space was established in 1994. Farm to Family Naturally, the cooperative that own the Sappington Farmer’s Market, filed for bankruptcy in December 2011.

The company added they are “continuing to look for opportunities for other store locations in the region and trust our customers will find us in a new location in the not-too-distant future.”
