Sunset Hills Holiday Inn Getting Route 66 Revamp

The Southwest Viking on Watson Road has new owners, and will receive a $4 million retro makeover, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

A Sunset Hills Holiday Inn recently changed hands, and the new owners are going to infuse the hotel with some Route 66 nostalgia, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The Holiday Inn Hotel St. Louis-Southwest Viking will soon be known as Holiday Inn Route 66, complete with classic car-themed meeting rooms, according to the report. View photos of the hotel's most recent renovations on their Facebook page.

Holiday Inn isn't the only Watson Road business to embrace its Route 66 heritage. Crestwood Bowl recently celebrated the re-lighting of its iconic neon sign, possible in part to a Route 66 preservation grant.

This is a good idea and perhaps Sunset Hills could work with Crestwood to actually implement this theme along Watson in a cool way. I'm thinking the Crestwood plaza redevelopment could also move along those lines -- using some clever architectural work. Make it sort of THE spot, give the area some personality. It's just a bunch of box store retail and strip mails now....snore.

I know the vast majority of Crestwood residents, myself included, wanted to see something done withRead More the old mall. It's too bad this is not reflected in our elected officials. I have given up hope. I just wish that I would have bought a house in Webster or Kirkwood rather than Crestwood. In a few years it will be nothing but empty buildings and resale stores while surrounding communities eat our lunch and our property taxes increase. What a shame.
