Photos Before and After: Classic Movie Marquee Takes a Twister Hit

Cinema sign whacked by high winds during Academy Awards ceremony Sunday.

Ronnie's 20 Cine stand-alone sign on Lindbergh Boulevard was whacked and nearly downed by the 60 mph winds that moved through Concord Village late Sunday.

Cinema staff said the sign was the only thing damaged at the spot.

There was no word Monday whether the sign would be replaced.

A handful of moviegoers Monday at Ronnie's agreed the letterboard-style sign went up in 1998 when Ronnie's re-opened with 20 theaters. The sign has since become somewhat of a landmark along Lindbergh, listing all the current movies.

The two metal support poles in cement were twisted and bent on the estimated 20- by 8-foot sign.

The high winds zipped through and zapped the sign just as the Academy Awards for films were being broadcast on TV Sunday night.

Meteorologists said Concord Village was the site of a tornado touchdown Sunday, but damage was not so severe as the New Year's Eve tornado that struck the area, destroying at least 10 homes in nearby Sunset Hills.
