Despite Tornado Damage, Airport to Re-Open Sunday

Mayor Slay said he was "stunned' by the condition of Lambert Airport.

St. Louis travelers have a bit of good news in light of Friday storms: Lambert Airport should operate at 70 percent capacity by Sunday.

Officials said in a news conference Saturday morning that Terminal One sustained the most damage, while Terminal Two had limited damage.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said that he was stunned the condition the airport was in last night but that airport employees have worked around the clock to get the airport running again. Slay said the airport should go to 100 percent capacity by the middle of the week.

While no lives were lost, there were still injuries. Lambert Airport director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said five airport customers were treated and released from an emergency room.

Hamm-Neibruegge said 12 airport customers spent Friday night in the terminal. A handful of flights, she said, were diverted from Lambert.

Dooley said 22 streets in the county are still closed, and 36,000 homes still were without power as of 10:08 p.m. Approximately 47,000 were without power at the height of the storm.

Dave Wakeman from Ameren said 1,000 employees were working to bring back the power. But he said people should plan for several days of outages.

Cindy Erickson, chief executive for the St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross, said the organization set up a shelter in Maryland Heights. She said that 10 people stayed at the shelter Friday night and that it will remain open for people who still need support.
