Great Escape: Mom, Find Your Inner Artist

Unleash your creative side by getting involved in community art.

I notice it's often difficult for moms I know to venture out into new activities, without the kids.

When I ask my friend Monica what her plans are for the weekend, she stares back like the answer should be obvious.

"Well, Saturdays are Jackson's soccer practices, and Sundays Emma and I work on her reading ," she replies. Duh, she thinks.

She says this without blinking, which frankly worries me a little.

It's not that she doesn't want to do something for herself--it's that her children come first, which by all standards is an acceptable way to parent.

Still, on more than one occasion I've heard her voice a need for something new, some exploration.

If you too have an itch to expand your horizons and are feeling creative, here's a suggestion on how to give it a chance.

On Sat. Feb. 25 , 1 - 5 pm, on South Hanley Drive is hosting Renoir Painting Day. Participate in recreating a large community Renoir-style painting to be permanently displayed at the store.

While you're there, pick up a few art supplies to bring home and use during whatever free time you can find. If painting is your medium, Artmart offers everything from acrylic to encaustic paints, along with brushes, easels, paper and canvas.

And just remember that Renoir used his family as inspiration for his work and so could you. Paint pictures of your children and make memories that last for years to come.

Looking to find your muse a little bit closer to home?

Check out the in  (the mall) that features a gallery with a variety of styles and works from ten local artists.

Spend just an hour or a whole day getting  inspired to make your own masterpieces.
