New Chance for 1-Year-Old to Join Police Force

Crestwood's Animal Control Services hope to give dumped dog a new "leash" on life.

This dog--barely a year old--has been offered a week's tryout with the St. Louis County Police Canine Unit, according to Crestwood's Animal Control Services.

Law enforcement is taking the dog, Shep, on trial in the hopes that his self confidence will improve to the point where he could join a police training program, officials said this week.

"If it does not work out, he will be looking for a home," according to Animal Control Services. "Only applicants with significant German shepherd experience, lots of patience and the time to work with the dog, will be considered," according to the Animal Control Services website.

Staff said the Shep was likely dumped in Whitecliff Park and animal control workers tried to corral him, but he seemed very fearful of people. Officials suspect he was abused or neglected since he did not seem particularly well socialized.

However, the following day Shep was waiting for Animal Control workers at the front gate of the shelter in Whitecliff Park.
