Navy Tales

"Sleepin in the classroom".

In a previous post, I threatened to tell some more stories from Memphis.

So here is a short one I call "Stand in Back".

In electronic technician school, we went to school at least eight hours a day Monday through Friday (and sometimes on a weekend day) with a lunch break, and several breaks during the day. This was, after all, our full time job we were being paid for.

At first, it was all classroom lecture, and later on there was more, and more hands on lab work. Depending on the instructor, some of the classes were kind of boring, and if you spent too much time at the club in the evening,it was hard to stay awake. Dozing off in class was a major sin, and might be met with a smack on the head, a hit with a well aimed eraser, or an order to "Stand in the Back" of the room.

As you can probably guess, we had one guy that was always tired, and had experienced all the above.

After a few warnings, he was told to stand in the back. You had to have your book, or whatever we were working with, and stay awake of course. In the middle of an explanation about whatever we were working on there was a Loud Crash, and we looked around to find the guy on the floor with his book, and papers in a pile. It was kind of funny, as long as it wasn't you involved.

Eventually the guy decided to get more sleep, and stay out of the club, and he did much better!
