Diabetes, the Flu and YOU!

Dear Reader:

Just wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the special risks and flu complications if you have diabetes.

  • If you have diabetes, it is recommended that you get the flu shot, not the nasal spray.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have flu-like symptoms.
  • Continue taking your insulin.
  • Test your blood sugar every four hours.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Weigh yourself daily. Losing weight without trying is a sign of high blood glucose.
  • Diabetes can weaken the immune system and also put you at greater risk for pneumonia.  Check with your doctor about the pneumococcal vaccine.

JDRF continues its work to develop new and better treatments to improve the lives of people with diabetes and keep them as healthy as possible.  stl.jdrf.org
