Firefighters Fill Boots for Muscular Dystrophy

Firefighters from the Crestwood and Mehlville fire protection districts are collecting money at area intersections for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Local firefighters are raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on weekends from now until Labor Day.

Crestwood fire personnel will be collecting donations at the intersection of Watson and Sappington roads from residents passing by. Mehlville firefighters will be stationed on Lindbergh Boulevard. They'll be storing the money in their boots in a tradition known as the "Fill the Boot" campaign.

Crestwood firefighters have contributed more than $10,000 annually during past efforts. The donates anywhere between $10,000 and $30,000 a year to muscular dystrophy, and is a leader in the area with the most money raised, said Assistant Chief Dan LaFata.

Firefighters volunteer while on duty over the weekends leading up to Labor Day and donate the money at the Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon Sept. 2.

“It’s been a tradition around here for as long as I’ve been in the fire district,” LaFata said.
