Updated: Maryland Heights Apartment Complex Catches Fire

Firefighters battled a fire at the Cedar Trace apartment complex near Dorsett Road and Interstate 270.

Emergency crews, as well as volunteers with the American Red Cross, were on the scene of a multi-unit apartment fire in Maryland Heights Monday afternoon around 2:30 p.m.

Maryland Heights Fire Protection Captain Robert Daus Jr. said when emergency crews arrived, firefighters received reports of people jumping from the balconies of their apartments to escape the blaze.

Six families were displaced because of the blaze. No one was reported injured.

The fire began in the kitchen of a third floor apartment and spread quickly throughout the interior of the apartment, Daus said.

"There was no fire damage on the lower levels and minimal smoke and water damage," Daus said. "This was considered a smaller fire. We prevented it from turning into a five alarm fire. If it had been five more minutes it could have been that.

According to the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter, a disaster action team responded to the fire at the Cedar Trace apartment complex.

Cedar Trace is located near the intersection of Dorsett Road and McKelvey Hill Drive, just west of Interstate 270.

According to the release, volunteers responded to the fire in the 12200 block of Encanto Drive. Those volunteers will be working with displaced residents to determine how to help meet their immediate needs.
