Mehlville Firefighter Rescued Family Members in House Fire

Mike Gapsch lost his mother, nephew and great-niece to a fire in South County last week.

Last week a Mehlville Fire Protection District firefighter was faced with having to rescue three of his family members from a house fire.

Georgetta, Terry and Maci Gapsch all died from injuries sustained in a house fire at 10005 St. Simon Ct. last week. MFPD firefighter Mike Gapsch, Georgetta's son, was among the first responders.

Mike helped pull his own mother from the burning home. He talks about the experience with Firehouse.

"I'm glad I was on duty. Otherwise I'd have a thousand questions of what could have been done better. But being here, I know it was done textbook. I would put these guys (firefighters) up against anybody," he told the publication.

Funeral services were held for Georgetta and Terry over the weekend. Visitation begins Tuesday for Maci. Maci's 13-year-old sister, Mia, survived the fire. She was released from the hospital late last week, according to Firehouse.

The Mehlville Fire Protection District is planning a barbecue to benefit the family, according to Call Newspapers.
