Crestwood History

My grandparents bought one of the first houses constructed in Crestwood.  My mother and her two sisters graduated from Lindbergh High School, as did I, and two of my three children.  As such, we are a four-generation Crestwood family.  And, anyone who has ever bowled, or who had parents or grandparents who lived here and bowled on a league up at Crestwood Bowl, would know my grandmother, Loretta Kelly, as she managed the bowling alley for over 30 years!

What do you currently see as the biggest issue facing the City of Crestwood? The biggest issue facing the Crestwood community is not the Crestwood Court Development project; in fact, this is only a small part of our overall difficulties.  Our city lacks clear goals and the direction to chart our means to get there.  Further, because this has been a systemic problem over a lengthy period of time, Crestwood residents have become both divided and hesitant.  By carefully examining our options, understanding and implementing compromise, and yes, taking some risks, our Board of Alderman could go a long way toward repairing the above.

In what area does the city need to improve? Are you satisfied with the way the city has been operating? Improvements to Crestwood will be garnered by setting clear developmental, fiscal, and cultural goals and, taking the necessary steps needed to begin these processes.  Our city has long stopped moving forward; we can no longer afford, literally and figuratively, to remain so adverse to progression.

What are your thoughts on the progress of redevelopment at Crestwood Court? What little progress that has been made regarding Crestwood Court, has been slowly administered and divisively fought.  I am for the current developmental plan brought forth by Centrum.  Having said that, before I would offer my final green light for the go ahead, I would need a bit more information from the developer.  Specifically, the impacts to the current business we have in Crestwood, i.e., Crestwood Bowl, Best Buy; the impact to our own public works abilities as well as our city government, i.e., police and firefighters; and the impact to our school district.  There are a few other specificities that I intend to research, for example, would they be willing to negotiate their TIF percentages and/or off “good faith” monies, much like an escrow account to offset our front-end costs, etc.; if these items are addressed satisfactorily, I would vote for the project.

Assume you win the election. What single thing do you want to accomplish during your time on the board? As my family has been in the community for four generations, we have lived, worked, and played here for a very long time and as such, I know what Crestwood has been and more so, I know what Crestwood can be again.  I am running for this position for two reasons:  one, because my family and I have garnered so much from this neighborhood and this school district, I want to be able to give something of service back; and two, I truly believe that I will bring attributes to the Board that I and many other residents, fear have been lacking for quite some time...creativity, experience, and an assertive and unifying disposition.  It is time for a new direction toward clear and concise destinations, which include not just specifically Crestwood Court, but also the short-term fiscal health and the long-term municipal success, of our city.  I believe my addition to the Board as Alderperson, can be just the motivating means to secure these very reachable ends.
