Crestwood Memorial Committee Gains New Member

Marvin Smith wants to keep memorial plans moving forward.

Crestwood Mayor Jeff Schlink recently observed Marvin Smith cleaning the Veterans War Memorial outside of . Even when approached before a committee meeting for a photo, Smith was outside, measuring the memorial for future upgrades. While he’s not a veteran himself, Smith has a relative honored on the memorial. It is that care and love that makes him a prime candidate to serve on the committee.

“I think it makes perfect sense for Mr. Smith to be a part of it,” Schlink said at last week’s Board of Alderman meeting. “I think officially welcoming him to the memorial committee would be beneficial to them.

Smith previously served on the City of Crestwood electrical advisory code and is experienced in construction and electrical trades. He wants to move the memorial forward, as the committee has been trying to do for more than a year with in their fundraising efforts.

Currently five names of Crestwood natives who were killed when serving in the military are on the memorial. A small amount of money has been raised, and donations are tax exempt. As part of the funding, the committee has vowed not to ask the city for any money, even though the memorial is sitting on city property.

The memorial committee was started with the encouragement of Crestwood's police Chief Mike Paillou—himself a U.S. Marine.
