Crestwood Municipal Sign Commission Code to Change

The commission discussed the need to change certain seconds of the code regarding signage.

Last week the voted to change four proposed sections on the Municipal Sign Code. Particularly of note was the first proposition, which clarified that three members of the commission must be present to constitute a quorum. Previous language conflicted with a section stating that a minimum of three members must be present to grant a sign variance. A quorum is typically more than half. In the sign commission’s case that is three members.

Alderman Darryl Wallach, who serves on the sign commission, said that there has been some difficulties in having members there, so to make matters simple is to reduce the numbers to have a quorum down to three.

Alderman Jerry Miguel made a motion to raise the number of people on the sign commission to seven, making the number needed for the quorum to be higher, but that motion did not pass.

The section of the code that states “Signs and devices prohibited: Mechanical contrivances; signs containing flashers, animators or mechanical movement or contrivances of any kind was deleted. It contradicted another section of the code that allowed those types of sign if approved by the commission.

Another conflict was a 10-foot clearance requirement under canopy signs where there is pedestrian traffic. Previous language of nine-feet conflicted with 10, so the board stuck with 10.

A support pole modification was made–the size of the support pole must be “proportional and harmonius” to the overall size of the sign. Current signs are grandfathered in; the new wordage only would apply to new signs.
