Crestwood Veterans Seeking Donations For Memorial

On July 19, U.S. Navy chief petty officer Sean Patrick Sullivan, a Crestwood resident, and two other service members died in a helicopter crash in the country of Oman.

Sullivan’s name is now inscribed in Crestwood’s Veterans Memorial, alongside six Crestwood service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The memorial is located at City Hall. 

“Hopefully, he will be the last name we have to inscribe on that wall,” said Bob Wagner, member of the Crestwood Veterans Committee.

Members of the committee, however, would like a bigger, more elaborate place to honor those inscribed on its walls. A plan is underway to improve and expand the current site. Among the plans is to get a space for each branch of the military as well as a plaque above the memorial honoring all the veterans.

But plans are costly, and volunteers have been organizing fundraisers and knocking on doors asking for donations.

“We would love to get it done as soon as possible, but we are tight on money,” Wagner explained.

On Nov. 17, committee volunteers will be outside of Sam’s Club in Kirkwood informing people about the project, and asking for their support.

On Veterans Day, the fallen Sullivan will be honored alongside other fallen soldiers during a special ceremony. Wagner has invited the public, stressing the importance of remembering about those who died while in service.

“It’s their heritage,” Wagner said. “This is their memorial to the fallen. Everybody knows a veteran that has paid a high price for protecting this country.”
