Good Samaritans Recognized for Lifesaving Actions During House Fire

Joseph Bedell and Mark Stevener helped an injured resident out of his burning home on Big Bend Boulevard last month.

Residents Joseph Bedell and Mark Stevener were recognized by Crestwood fire officals during Tuesday's Board of Aldermen meeting for their livesaving efforts in a Crestwood house fire last month.

Fire officials responded to the house fire at 9542 Big Bend Blvd. the evening of Jan. 9. Bedell and Stevener were passing by the home when they noticed the smoke.

"After forcing the door, they saw the occupant of the house lying on the floor," according to a proclamation from the Cirestwood Board of Fire Commissioners. "They entered the structure with heavy smoke conditions down to the floor and rescued the resident by pulling him to safety."

The house was ruled uninhabitable due to smoke, heat and water damage, Crestwood Fire Chief Menning said. St. Louis County Police Department spokesman Randy Vaughn said the department's Bomb and Arson Unit ruled the fire's cause as accidental.
