Poll: Is Extending a Tax the Same as Increasing One?

The South County Times reports on Sunset Hills' plans to extend a half-cent sales tax. Vote in the poll: Does extending an existing tax constitute a tax increase to Sunset Hills residents?

' special Revenue Review Committee met for the first time recently and discussed a variety of revenue-generating methods to close a budget gap, according to a story Friday in the South County Times.

The Times reported that the city has a $112,000 to $160,000 gap between revenues and expenses.

The article noted that Mayor Bill Nolan five predecessors to the revenue committee: Michael Svoboda, John Hunzeker, James Hobbs, Ken Vogel and Nancy Benson. Also serving are Ann Ludlow, Art Havener, Kurt Krueger, Michelle Heutel and Ken Conley.

The committee discussed revenue raising efforts such as increasing the utility tax and asking voters to extend the current half-cent capital-improvement tax, which set to expire in 2016. The Times reported that voters approved the tax initially in 1994.
