Two Resolutions Read at Crestwood Board of Aldermen Meeting

Mayor Jeff Schlink honored both Audrey A. Walsh and the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Tuesday night’s Crestwood Board of Aldermen publicly recognized Audrey A. Walsh, who passed away Dec. 27, 2011 with appreciation for her service to the community and the Thomas Sappington House Foundation.

Walsh served as the first female alderman in the early 1960s and was active in the purchase and restoration of Sappington House. In 1961 she started fundraising to save the house, and in 1965 the first stage of restoration was completed. In 1966 it was dedicated to the public.

Walsh also was involved with the building of the Library of Americana, the restaurant and the gift shop on the grounds and told many she wanted the house to be restored for years to come.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) also was proclaimed by Schlink on Tuesday night. The GFWC was organized April 24, 1890, and chartered by President William McKinley and the United States Congress March 3, 1901. This makes the federation the oldest non-denominational international service organization of volunteer women in the world.

In 1962 the Crestwood Women’s Club became affiliated with GFWC, therefore celebrating 50 years of affiliation in February 2012.
