Drained Pool Won't Leave Lindbergh Swimmers Floundering

The Lindbergh High School pool will be out of commission for six weeks this summer into the beginning of the fall sports schedule, programs shifted to Sperreng pool.

The pool at Lindbergh High School will be out of commission for six weeks this summer into the beginning of the fall sports schedule, but school officials say no one is expected to be left out to dry because of the repairs.

The nearly eight-year-old pool will be undergoing repairs beginning July 8 as crews from Bazan Painting Company of St. Louis drain and recoat the concrete basin of the pool with high performance paint.

Lindbergh’s Executive Director of Planning and Development Karl Guyer said all of the programs normally hosted at the pool during the time of repairs will be shifted to the pool at Sperreng Middle School.

Tim Lombardo, coach of Lindbergh’s swimming and diving teams, and Mike Slyman, Lindbergh athletic director, will coordinate swimming practice until repairs are expected to be complete on Aug. 20.

While some fall sports start before the pool’s expected completion date, the swim team’s schedule will not begin until after the repairs, Guyer said.

The pool must be recoated every three to four years, and was last painted in July 2008. The Lindbergh School Board unanimously approved Bazan’s bid of $30,112 for the project during its board meeting Tuesday at the Early Childhood Education Center.

In other news, the board gave accolaides to Truman Middle School Principal Dr. Jennifer Tiller and the high school jazz ensemble.

Tiller was praised for her selection as the 2012 Missouri Middle School Principal of the Year by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. The state award recognizes her impact in leadership, curriculum, instruction and assessment, and her personalization of the learning environment.

The Lindbergh High School Jazz Lab were recognized for snapping up first place in the “Second High School Band” category at the 27th annual jazz in the Meadows festival in Chicago. The championship finish is the highest placement the band has received in its four years of attending the festival. Will Gerdel, a senior guitarist, and Steve Johnson, a freshman alto saxophonist, also drew accolades for receiving “Outstanding Soloist” awards.
