Lindbergh Cheerleaders One of Summer Camp Top Squads

The Flyers' cheerleading squads received several awards at the National Cheerleading Association camp.

Lindbergh High School (LHS) cheerleaders were one of the top squads among 20 teams at the National Cheerleaders Association summer camp at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO).

They received the “Most Spirited School” award for the fourth consecutive year, and the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen squads earned bids to go to a national cheerleading competition.

Madison Dougherty, varsity captain, took home an award for her leadership skills and four cheerleaders, SheKieah Kemp, Danielle Koch, Lexi Hoffman, Adrienne Doerr, were named to the All-American team. Koch also received a “Top Gun” award for tumbling.

“This year's squad is unique because they have all cheered together for several years and have developed close friendships on and off the field. Their closeness helps them to communicate as a team and meet their athletic goals,” said Coaches Jennifer Schaefer and Casey Feldt. “They are fun to be around, and their spirit is contagious to our fans!”

Members of the squad support their coaches’ sentiments and believe the team’s success is a direct result of their friendships. Koch and Doerr said the team’s bond grew stronger while attending SEMO camp, and they learned how to work better together. Kemp added that bus trips to away games, camps and competitions are her favorite memories of being a LHS cheerleader.

Among their honors the LHS varsity and freshmen squads took first place in the Champion Chant competition and received an “Spot” award for safety. The junior varsity team won first place in the performance competition, and the varsity squad earned a “Technical Excellence for Motions” award.

“Whether it’s receiving an individual or squad award, it makes me happy to gain recognition for cheering because our hard work is finally paying off and others get to see how talented we all are,” said Doerr.

The award-winning LHS cheerleading squads will be giving special performances for Homecoming on Sept. 30, All-District Night on Oct.14 and at the second annual Sunday Night Lights event on Oct. 16.

Flyer fans can help the squads raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer by attending the annual "Just Stand Up" Cheer Classic from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Oct. 29 at the University Missouri-St. Louis. All money raised at the event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. You also can see the LHS cheerleaders at every varsity game during the school year. Go Flyers!
