Lindbergh Snow Closures Shorten Summer Break; Schools Re-Open Thursday

Students are now scheduled to return for classes in June, after Memorial Day weekend.

Our area may have escaped the worst of this week’s winter blast, but ice and snow hit the Lindbergh School District hard enough to change the calendar.

Classes at all Lindbergh schools will now end on Wednesday, June 1. The district had originally scheduled classes to end the previous Thursday.

“We have six make-up days built into the calendar,” explained Beth Cross, the district’s community relations director. “Because of the weather, we’re having to use the make-up days at the end of the (school) year.”

Under Missouri law, school districts must hold classes for at least 174 days, and provide at least 1,044 hours of classroom time for students. Lindbergh had scheduled 177 days of classes, which meant the district could cancel up to three days of classes without affecting its schedule.

But this week’s storms forced Lindbergh to cancel classes Tuesday and Wednesday, pushing the year’s “snow days” usage to five.

It’s an unusually large number of cancellations for Lindbergh and Superintendent Dr. James Simpson “can’t remember the last time we’ve had to call classes two days in a row,” according to Cross.

The district announced late Wednesday afternoon that schools would reopen Thursday.

The make-up days mean students will have off Memorial Day weekend as originally scheduled, but return to class afterward for two more days.

The unexpected cancellations also forced Lindbergh administrators to scramble on payroll since the closures have hindered the process, apparently.

In a note on the district website, Assistant Superintendent Pat Lanane asked non-teaching staff to turn in time sheets by 8:15am Thursday.
