Mock Car Crash Educates at Lindbergh High School

Lindbergh High School Reaching Adolescent Drivers (RAD) and the Mehlville Fire Department hold a mock car crash to emphasize the dangers of drinking and driving.

On Wednesday afternoon, juniors and seniors at headed down to the football field where a mock car crash was set up by Reaching Adolescent Drivers (RAD) and the Mehlville Fire Department, to help educate students about the dangers of drinking and driving.

"We wanted to show the students under controlled circumstances that this is what happens," said Carol Hoorman, a RAD sponsor and Drivers Ed teacher at Lindbergh High School.

RAD is a 10 year old organization at Lindbergh High School that began when two juniors, Greg Formhals and Ryan Devine, died in a car crash due to slick road conditions.

"It's important for (students) to know there are things they can do to be safe," said Tom Mace, Formhals's father, who is still very involved with RAD along with Formhals's mother, Terri Mace.

Lindbergh High School students acted in the mock car crash, and school resource officer Paul Gordon and Affton firefighter Scott Manning narrated the event, letting students know what was going on as the Mehlville Fire Department responded to the "call" and worked to help the victims of the crash.

"It's been a long time, hasn't it?" said Officer Gordon to the juniors and seniors as they waited for the fire trucks to arrive. Many students nodded. "In reality it's only been about 30 seconds. The usual response time is two to three minutes," said Officer Gordon.
