He said Lindbergh is used to having large numbers of National Merit scholars, but Carrie Bennett, a counselor for the 2012 class, said she and her colleagues have never had this many Finalists in any school they've worked in.

Nationally, 1.5 million high school students take the PSAT/NMSQT® test, which measures critical reading, mathematics and writing skills. Approximately 3 percent, or 50,000 of those students qualify as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.

Approximately 16,000 Finalists are chosen from the Semifinalists. The Finalists' academic record, written recommendations, outside activities, leadership and an essay are considered in choosing which students will win a Merit Scholarship award.

The winners will be notified from March through mid-June.
