Game Preview: Lindbergh Aims to Roll Over Marquette at Flyers Field

The Mustangs are 2-2 and hoping to move up in the Suburban West standings, while the Flyers are 3-1 and on a roll.

Friday Night Lights this week means a contest between the Marquette Mustangs (2-2) and (3-1) at Flyers Field on Lindbergh Boulevard in Sappington/Sunset Hills at 7 p.m.

This intriguing Suburban West Conference matchup has the visiting Mustangs coming off their biggest win of the season, a 40-6 drubbing of Northwest House Springs.

Lindbergh, at 3-1 in league play, is one of the three teams tied for second in the conference, and is coming off back-to-back blowout wins over Fox and Parkway South.

The Mustangs are looking to move into the logjam at second place in the Suburban West standings.

In that victory, Marquette held Northwest standout Adnan Al-Amimi to just 17 rushing yards on 16 carries, while also producing nine quarterback sacks and four turnovers. This included a 57-yard fumble return by Jacob Vernon and a 46-yard interception return by John James that both went for scores.

He led the Mustangs' defensive charge with 12 total tackles and three of those quarterback sacks.

Offensively, the Mustangs are led by junior quarterback Daniel Slattery and freshman running back/kick returner Jacobi Boykin, who leads Marquette with almost 500 all-purpose yards this year.

Last week, Lindbergh senior quarterback Peter Simpson passed for 212 yards and three touchdowns as the Flyers cruised to a 36-7 win at Parkway South.

The Flyers defense also had a big night, registering four quarterback sacks and forcing two turnovers in its third great performance of the season.

Overall, senior lineback Chris Kew leads the Flyers with 47 tackles this season, while senior pass rushers Payton Reed (four sacks) and Jordan Goodman (three sacks) have dominated opposing offensive lines.

As good as Lindbergh’s “D” was last week, Marquette’s might’ve been better.
