Game Preview: Lindbergh Aims to Slow Down Eureka's Spencer Stein

Lindbergh's game plan against Eureka this week has a simple but complex instruction.

Lindbergh’s game plan against Eureka this week has a simple but complex instruction.

“We need to slow down Spencer Stein,” said Lindbergh coach Tom Beauchamp, who earned his 100th victory last week. “He is a great player we need to really make sure we try to slow him down.”

Stein is Eureka’s 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior running back who takes 726 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns into Friday’s 7 p.m. Surburban West Conference game at Lindbergh, where the Flyers (4-1, 4-1) are celebrating homecoming.

The match-up also pairs two teams receiving votes in this week’s Class 6 statewide poll.

Eureka (4-1, 3-1) is coming off a 27-20 victory in which it needed a 54-yard fumble returned for a TD by senior lineman Connor Fairfax with less than two minutes left to settle a late tie.

“As I have told the team this week, Lindbergh is better than us and if we play our A game and they play their A game, they will beat us,” Eureka coach Farrell Shelton said. “We could play a perfect game but still not win.  All we are focused on this week is playing the best we can play, and take care of us.”

Lindbergh’s defense has allowed one touchdown in its last 12 quarters.

“The turnover battle will be a big one for us to keep the ball away from their offense which is as potent as we will see this year,” Shelton said. “They have the No. 1 defense in the conference so we will have to maintain ball control and eat the clock.”

Lindbergh senior quarterback Peter Simpson has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. Sophomore Garrett Krueger and seniors Blake Beauchamp and Ryan Woodland have double digit receptions. Senior Grant Krueger leads a balanced run game with 179 yards.
