Giegling's OT Goal Gives Lindbergh Dramatic District Championship

Mackenzie Giegling's goal in the second overtime gives the Flyers a 3-2 victory over Summit in the Class 3 District 2 title game.

A freshman came through with a winning goal for the Lindbergh Flyers—on a girls soccer team led by seniors.

Mackenzie Giegling’s goal in the second overtime of Friday night’s Class 3 District 2 championship match at Oakville High gave the Flyers a 3-2 victory over Rockwood Summit.

“I just wanted to scream my heart out,” Giegling said of her feelings after her shot bounced over Summit goalkeeper Kylie Lawrence and into the right corner of the net. “It was awesome for me to experience this as just a freshman.”

The fourth-seeded Flyers advanced to the title tilt by upsetting No. 1 Cor Jesu 1-0 on penalty kicks on Wednesday night. No. 3 Summit advanced with a 2-1 PK victory over host, and second-seeded, Oakville.

The Falcons (16-7-1) dominated early in what was a physical match with 20 combined fouls. Kali Thomas put Summit on the board after 15  minutes when she knocked in a rebound off a Kacey Bright shot.

The Suburban South co-champs led 2-0 after Thomas blasted Nicole Keeve’s perfectly placed corner kick past Lindbergh keeper Nina Tzianos.

“We were frustrated because we had played a terrible half, both offensively and defensively,” Lindbergh coach Mark Giesing said. “We just played a bad 40 minutes and we knew it. We knew we were better. Our seniors called everyone to step up. They didn’t want this to be their last game.”

It took 11 minutes for junior Kate Campbell to help right the ship—and she got a little help from Mother Nature.

Campbell’s 30-yard free kick from the right side was initially headed wide, but pushed back toward the net by wind gusts of more than 20 miles per hour. The bended shot went past Lawrence to cut the lead in half.

“Obviously, the wind was a factor. Let’s not pretend it wasn’t,” Giesing said. “Kate Campbell’s long-distance goal maybe doesn’t go in if she doesn’t have a little bit of extra juice with the wind.”

Summit coach Chris Kappler said he was worried with just a 2-1 advantage.

“We played outstanding and the way we controlled the first half and got up on them 2-0,” Kappler said. “The soccer gods were with (Lindbergh) and they got that nice breeze in the second half. That made it hard to get the ball out of our end.”

Giegling nearly tied things with just over six minutes remaining, but her header off another Keeve corner went over the net. Rachel Greer got the equalizer three minutes later.

The senior forward, who had missed the final two weeks of the regular season with a concussion, pushed in a rebound off a Keeve shot to force overtime.

“We felt confident going into overtime,” Giesing said. “Once we got the wind again in the second overtime, we were feeling pretty confident we could put a ball in the back of the net.”

Kappler said it was hard to get his team motivated for overtime because the momentum had clearly swung in Lindbergh’s favor.

“They had the momentum and they took advantage of it,” Kappler said. “There was such a huge momentum shift and it took the wind out of our girls. Even though our girls fought hard in the overtime, it was just hard for us to get the control back.”
