Lindbergh Baseball Improves 4-1

The Flyers used the big inning in victories over St. Mary's and Mehlville.

The start of the 2012 season has been a successful one for the Oakville and Cor Jesu soccer teams.

Oakville improved to 4-0 Saturday with a . Ashley Burton scored her team high fourth goal in regulation and Lauren Fussell added the winner in overtime. The Tigers have scored 16 goals in their four victories.

Eight different players have scored so far for Summit in its 3-0 start. Kali Thomas leads the way with four goals.

Defense has been the key for Cor Jesu in its 4-0 start. The Chargers have three shutouts in the four games with wins over Edwardsville (4-0), Marquette (4-0) and Ursuline (3-0). 

Affton's Haley Stewart found the back of the net five times in a pair of Cougar victories, which moved them to .500 at 4-4. Stewart had three goals in a 10-1 win over University City and had a part in all four goals with two goals and two assists in a 4-1 victory over Brentwood.

Seckman also got back to .500 at 3-3 after a 1-0 win over Perryville Friday.

Lindbergh has had a tough early season schedule and has a 1-2 record to show for it with a 3-0 win over Hazelwood Central and losses to Triad (2-1) and Hazelwood West (3-1).

Lutheran South and Fox are struggling in different ways. The Lancers are 1-3 after giving up 19 goals in back-to-back games last week. Lutheran South lost to Kirkwood 9-0 and De Soto 10-4. Fox fell to 3-4 as it followed a three-game winning streak with a three-game losing streak. The Warriors scored just one goal in the three games.

Baseball

The Lindbergh baseball team improved to 4-1 after a pair of routs and a classic pitcher's dual. The Flyers used the big inning in victories over St. Mary's and Mehlville. Lindbergh scored eight times in the fifth inning in a 14-4 win over St. Mary's Tuesday and did itself one better with nine runs in the fourth Wednesday in a 15-2 rout of Mehlville. Sean Murphy had three doubles, four runs scored and three RBI in the win over the Panthers.

The Flyer bats took a day off Thursday but one run was good enough for pitcher Jordan Harmon, who blanked DuBourg 1-0. 

The loss to Lindbergh is the only one so far for Mehlville in the early going. The Panthers improved to 4-1 Wednesday with a 9-3 victory over Webster Groves.

Lutheran South has been one of the area's hottest teams and the Lancer bats are the main reason. Lutheran South has scored 65 runs in its first six games, all victories. The Lancers got off to a good start in the Metro League last week with wins over Principia (16-5) and Priory (10-1).

Northwest and Affton both made its first wins of 2012 memorable ones. Northwest came back after being down 3-0 after four innings to beat St. Charles West 8-3. Bradley Cornman pitched five scoreless innings for the Lions and also had two hits and two RBI. Affton scored twice in the seventh in its 4-3 win over Herculaneum Tuesday. Anthony Herron struck out 13 and also had a pair of hits, a run scored and RBI to pace the Cougars.

Oakville and Summit each lost a pair of one-run games this week. Webster Groves scored twice in the seventh Tuesday to defeat Oakville 6-5. Parkway South beat the Tigers Thursday 10-9 despite a home run, double, three runs scored and three RBI by C.J. Martin.

Summit fell to 0-3 for the season after tough losses to Parkway North (10-9) and Fort Zumwalt East (4-3).

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Oakville soccer's Lauren Fussell scored the overtime goal against Mehlville Saturday afternoon. The goal was the first one for the senior who has four assists for the season. 

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Lindbergh pitcher Jordan Harmon allowed just two hits in going the distance while striking out seven and walking just one. The 6-foot-2 junior also drove in the game's only run.
