Suburban West Roundup: Lindbergh Softball Wins Four Out of Five

The latest news and notes from the Suburban West Conference.

The  team is off to a good start this fall. The Tigers are 3-0 in the conference with wins against Fox, Marquette and Parkway South.

But the most impressive outing of the season for the Tigers may have come in their lone loss as they fell to Villa Duchesne, 24-26, 25-17, 24-26 Wednesday.

Villa has the nucleus of its team which won the MWAA Red Division last year and finished second in state in Class 3 two years ago.

The Lafayette girls are also playing well. The Lancers are 4-1 and have won their only league match.

Softball: Parkway South On a Roll

The Parkway South softball team was expected to be one of the top teams this fall and they are living up to expectations. The Patriots have already won a pair of tournaments and entered play this week with an 11-0 record.

Alyssa Francis leads the team with a .613 average while Sheridon Sprague is 10-0 on the mound. Sprague has four shutouts and has struck out 80 in 57.7 innings.

There are a lot of new faces on the defending state-champion Oakville softball team. A couple of players are taking advantage of increased playing time. Savannah Fedorchak has 17 runs batted in while Rachel McNamara is hitting .567. Fedorchak had eight RBI in 32 at bats last year. McNamara hit .300 in just 10 at-bats in 2010.

Lindbergh softball is 10-5 after winning four of its past five games. Freshman Brittany Stevens leads the team with 14 RBIs while teammate senior infielder Abby Nestor has 21 hits for a .404 batting average.

Fox softball is only 2-6, but senior outfielder Janelle Hackmann has stepped up to lead the Warriors with 13 hits and .464 batting average.

Field Hockey: Marquette Playing Well

The Marquette field hockey team had an impressive showing in the Gateway Classic over the Labor Day weekend. The Mustangs won their pool with wins over Cassady, Ok. (1-0), Louisville Collegiate (2-1) and St. Joseph's Academy (1-0).

Football: Lafayette, Parkway South Stay Undefeated

The Lafayette and Parkway South football teams remain undefeated after their wins Friday night.

The Lancers followed up their exciting overtime victory over Lindbergh last week with a 21-7 win over Mehlville. Deonte Robinson scored all three Lancers touchdowns. All three of their wins have been conference contests.

Parkway South's defense continues to impress after a 12-6 win over Oakville. The Patriots have used a ball-control offense and a stifling defense in their wins against Fox, Jackson and Oakville. Parkway South has rushed for over 200 yards as a team in all three games, which has helped a defense that has allowed just 12 points in three games.

The Parkway South defense scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on Friday against the Tigers as Terrell Bland picked off a pass and ran 55 yards for a touchdown.

Lindbergh bounced back well from the overtime loss to Lafayette with a dominating performance in a 34-3 win over Fox. Peter Simpson threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Flyers.

Simpson was aided by brothers Grant Krueger (senior running back) and sophomore receiver Garrett Krueger. They accounted for 235 of Lindbergh’s 316 yards.

Eureka's offense continues to put up big points. The Wildcats shut out Marquette 48-0 at the Edward Jones Dome. They now have 133 points in three games. Quarterback Seth Pratt had another outstanding day. He completed 15-of-21 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Sloyer came in late in the game and completed all three of his passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.

The two conference football teams from Jefferson County continue to struggle, especially offensively. They have combined for just 16 points in their three games. Fox has scored nine points while Northwest, which has been shut out in its past two games, has scored just seven.

Patch Boys Athlete of the Week

Eureka QB Seth Pratt has some mighty impressive numbers early in the season. He has completed 52-of-84 passes (61.9 percent) for 751 yards. Pratt has thrown seven touchdowns and has been intercepted just once. He has also rushed for 85 yards in 15 carries for the 2-1 Wildcats.

Patch Girls Athlete of the Week

Marquette field hockey goalie Angelina Kelly earns the honors this week after allowing just one goal in three games as the Mustangs won their pool at the Gateway Classic over the Labor Day weekend.

In fact, Kelley went 5-0 overall with four shutouts in Marquette’s first five games, including a 1-0 win over highly-regarded MICDS.
