German Fest Unites Heritage with Family Fun

The Sunset Hills Historical Society hosted its annual German Fest at the Sunset Hills aquatic center.

Dodging the threat of rain and greeted with slightly cooler temperatures, the Sunset Hills Historical Society helped put smiles on faces from different backgrounds and ages at German Fest June 21.

The idea for German Fest, according to Historical Society member Joyce Franklin, derived from the German settlers who came to the Sunset Hills area before it was Sunset Hills. The festival featured a variety of music styles from multi-talented Herb Eberle in concert, a German-themed menu available for purchase and free entry into the Watson Trail Park pool after 5 p.m., where the festival was hosted.

Eberle, sometimes playing more than one instrument at once, kept the audience interested switching from polka to classic Sinatra hits to more contemporary favorites. Bratwursts, hot dogs and pretzels were among the menu items.

Family Summer Concert Nights at the pool take place each Thursday through Aug. 9, continuing June 28 with Gentleman Bandits. Though German Fest was free, all other concerts' entry cost $4 for non-members after 5 p.m.
