The unofficial start to summer is an official federal holiday remembering the men and women who died while serving in the military.
School's out, grills are heating up and pools are filling with water. Memorial Day weekend unofficially marks the start of the summer season and a three-day weekend that many haven't seen in months.
Memorial Day, according to Wikipedia.com, used to be known as Decoration Day. It originated after the Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers. Memorial Day now honors all Americans who have died in all wars and has been expanded to an extended weekend of lake trips, pool openings and family gatherings.
