Hundreds Go 'Hands on Kirkwood'

This year's Hands on Kirkwood event drew 550 volunteers, the most ever for the one day community mission blitz.

More than 500 volunteers descended on Kirkwood Saturday in an unprecedented show of community service.

“We had so many organizations supporting the effort this year, we had no other option but to succeed,” said Jason Norton, co-chair of Hands On Kirkwood.

Successes include:

  • 550 volunteers;
  • Completion of 32 home projects;
  • 900 cars coming through the Electronic Recycling event with more 90,000 pounds of waste diverted from landfills;
  • More than 100 large boxes of food for the local food pantry ;
  • ;
  • Four senior homes visited;
  • Thousands of winter clothes collected and distributed to those in need;
  • A van load of winter clothes sent to Joplin, MO, tornado victims;
  • Half of Kirkwood's Metropolitan Sewer District storm water drains marked with reminders not to dump trash;
  • A thousand people visiting KiddoPalooza;
  • Over a truckload of baby care items for Nurses for Newborns;
  • Several dogs romping through the One Day Dog Park;
  • More than 70 cars checked;
  • An enormous amount of the invasive honeysuckle removed from ;
  • Over 1,000 Facebook friends;
  • Smiles, relationships made, community spirit too many to count!
