Crestwood Court ArtSpace Deemed 'Innovative' Use for Failing Mall

Owners of the Crestwood mall were praised by The Atlantic Cities for morphing empty storefronts into a public art venue. The mall has one tenant left after the Post Office's closing earlier this week.

Did you think that ArtSpace was a good use of the vacant storefronts in Crestwood Court?  Since the Crestwood Post Office's closure on Jan. 7, the shopping center--of which the sole tenant is now a LensCrafters--can be offically deemed a dead mall. But an experiment that granted local arts groups mall space for cheap rents is named as an innovative way to revive dying shopping centers. The Atlantic Cities mentions ArtSpace among seven creative solutions to mall vacancies. Other types of spaces featured included mixed use spaces with residences and retail, a town hall, and outdoor parks with performing arts spaces. Art Space Dance Studio Keeps Roots in Crestwood

The Studio 42, which opened in Crestwood Court roughly three years ago, has a new, permanent space on Reco Avenue.

A dance studio that once occupied Art Space at Crestwood Court has found a new, permanent space in the community. The Crestwood Board of Aldermen approved The Studio 42’s request to operate out of 1157 Reco Ave. last Tuesday. Owners Lawrence and Tracey Harmon offer weekly dance classes and social dance nights. They opened the studio in Crestwood Court's Art Space three years ago, according to city documents.  Dance styles vary from salsa, west coast swing, line dancing, and even zumba. A Friday night dance draws between 80 and 130 dancers, according to planning and zoning commission minutes. The space can also be used for special events, according to the studio’s website. Crestwood Court Art Space Receives Temporary Liquor License for Annual Murder Mystery Theater

China King restaurant also was granted a full liquor license by the Crestwood Board of Aldermen.

Crestwood Court’s Art Space tenants will have something to celebrate this weekend as they host their annual Murder Mystery Theater. Food Service Consultants, Inc., who will service the beverages at the event, was granted a full short-term liquor license for Feb. 17-18 after the required background check. The Affton CenterStage Theatre Company is hosting the dinner theater both this weekend and Feb. 24-25. There will be five performances with a matinee on Feb. 25. China Kina restaurant is now able to serve liquor on a full-time basis at 167 Watson Plaza. China Kina also was unanimously granted a Sunday sales license by Crestwood’s Board of Aldermen.

Looks like the only groath industry in Crestwood is going to be Sobriety checkpoints.. The Board of Aldermen is to be commended for finally having found something that generates revenue for the city.   more ›
